What I’m Working On: Untitled Lucha Project, Excerpt 3

This is the third part of a script I’m writing, eventually (I hope) to be a comic book, once I have money, an artist, etc…

A few notes…first of all, this will make little sense if you haven’t read the other parts, which are linked below.

Also, click on “Read More” at the bottom of this post to see the fuill excerpt.

Part 1 is HERE

Part 2 is HERE.

And now…part 3

PAGE 9, PANEL 1: ESTABLISHING SHOT—A MAKESHIFT STAGE OUTSIDE. News vans surround the stage, and a throng of people push to get a better view. Spotlights hit the stage, which looks like it was constructed in a hurry. There is a microphone on the stage.

PAGE 9, PANEL 2: CLOSE UP OF A REPORTER, looking at the “camera.” He speaks into his own mic.

REPORTER: “…and we’re still waiting for a spokesman for the police department to comment on the shooting of Defensor Valorosa, who was reportedly wounded or killed in front of the [NAME OF RESTAURANT] restaurant, on Mascaros Blvd. So far, there is no update on the world champion luchador and crimefighter’s condition…”

PAGE 9, PANEL 3: BEHIND THE REPORTER, CABALLERO ESTRELLA and A DETECTIVE walk onto the stage, with several officers. The Detective is wearing a suit and tie. CABALLERO is wearing a dark suit and tie, and his Luchador mask, which is cut open at the top to expose his black hair. There is a star design around his eyes, but the mask is dark enough that it does not look fey (I’m not going for a Paul Stanley thing). The REPORTER looks back.

REPORTER: “..though we hope…wait a minute. It looks like a spokesman is on stage, along with Defensor’s protege, the Star Knight Detective himself, Caballero Estella!”

PAGE 9, PANEL 4: CLOSE IN ON THE STAGE. THE DETECTIVE IS AT THE MIC, BESIDE CABALLERO. POLICE flank them, and one officer tries to quiet the crowd.

DETECTIVE: “Attention, please…[Attention, please]…At approximately 6:45 this evening, Defensor Valerosa was leaving the [NAME OF RESTAURANT] with an acquaintance, one Sandra Rose, when he was shot by an unknown assailant, apparently from a nearby rooftop. Paramedics arrived at the scene at 6:52 PM, but where unable to revive him.

PAGE 9, PANEL 5: THE CROWD GASPS AND BEGINS TO GET RESTLESS. A POLICEMAN tries to signal them to calm down.

DETECTIVE: “Defensor Valerosa was pronounced dead at the scene.”

DETECTIVE (second balloon): “Ms. Rose is not a suspect, and we have no leads at this time. Be assured that this is a top priority, and we will have every available man on the case. I now give the floor to Caballero Estrella.”

PAGE 9, PANEL 6: CLOSE UP OF CABALLERO. He is at the mic. Tears well in his eyes, but do not fall.

CABALLERO: “Ladies, gentlemen, it is with a heavy heart that I stand here tonight.”

PAGE 10, PANEL 1: CABALLERO IS STILL AT MIC.

CABALLERO: “Many of you have been fans of Defensor Valerosa your whole lives. Some of you were there from the beginning, when he was still on the indie circuit and still breaking up the local rackets in his hometown, before I was even born. Still others started following his exploits when he joined Los Justicia Siete, fighting crime internationally.”

PAGE 10, PANEL 2: CABALLERO RUBS THE TEARS FROM HIS EYES.

CABALLERO: “He was a hero to all of us…he touched all of our lives.

PAGE 10, PANEL 3: CABALLERO LOOKS AT AUDIENCE, NOW MORE ANGRY THAN SAD.

CABALLERO: “When this…murderer… took Valerosa’s life, he took something from all of us. I vow that I will not rest until the killer is brought to justice!”

PAGE 10, PANEL 4: CABELLERO CONTINUES TO TALK, NOW A LITTLE MORE CALM.

CABALLERO: “Yes?”

REPORTER (OFF PANEL): The police have no leads; do you, personally, suspect anyone specifically”

CABALLERO: “Of course, I have a short list of…persons of interest, but no formal suspects as such. Next question.”

PAGE 10, PANEL 5: CABALLERO POINTS AT A REPORTER (OFF PANEL).

REPORTER (OFF PANEL): Will the Juvenile Diabetes benefit, scheduled for tomorrow, be canceled?”

CABALLERO: “I have spoken with the promoters, as well as several of the contenders, and the card will still go on, as planned. As you all know, this was a cause that Defensor Valerosa cared a great deal about, and I doubt he would want to cancel it.”

PAGE 10, PANEL 6: A DETECTIVE WHISPERS SOMETHING TO CABALLERO.

PAGE 10, PANEL 7: CABELLERO IS BACKING AWAY FROM THE MIC.

CABALLERO: “I now give the floor back to detective Perez. Thank you.”

PAGE 11, PANEL 1: CABALLERO IS BEHIND THE STAGE, WHICH HAS BEEN CORDONED OFF. He is on a cell phone.

CABALLERO: “You found the Puma? Great. Make sure…what? What do you mean?”

PAGE 11, PANEL 2: CABALLERO IS GETTING INTO A LIMO.

CABALLERO: “Well, can’t you just hit him with a net gun or something? No, no, I understand. But if he gets into the jungle, he’ll be gone for days. I need him here tonight. Tomorrow morning at the latest. The trail’s getting colder by the hour. Out.”

PAGE 11, PANEL 3: CABALLERO SITS IN THE BACK OF THE LIMO. The window between the driver and the back is open. CABALLERO is dialing his cell phone.

CABALLERO: “Driver, back to the mansion. And privacy, por favor.”

PAGE 11, PANEL 4: CABALLERO SITS BACK, TALKING ON THE CELL PHONE.

CABALLEREO: “Javier? It’s Caballero. I’m coming back. Prepare the ‘Planetarium’. And hold all my calls, unless they are from Detective Perez or concern Puma. Out.”

PAGE 11, PANEL 5: CABALLERO LOOKS OUT THE WINDOW, FOCUSED. This is a view from outside the limo, slightly above.
