Skate or Die!!!

Years since I had last been roller skating: about 14.
Times previously I had been skating in my life: 2.
Confidence I had in my skating ability: 0.
Number of times I fell down on the skating rink:…0!

Kelly and I went roller skating on Friday, and despite my apprehensions and lack of experience skating, I did alright. Actually, Kelly, who used to skate fairly often, said that I was skating as well as she was by the end of the night, and she was surprised at how fast I was taking the corners.

The kids that were out there, though….jeesh! Speed skating, going backwards, sliding on their toes…it was amazing and intimidating to watch. I felt a little old and out of place there, but overall, I did alright.

Another surprise was the music that they played. The crowd was mostly 12-14-year-olds, but the songs included “Crank Dat Soulja Boy,” “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance (Chorus: “Teenagers scare the living shit out of me”), and some song about “Sexy Magic”. Granted, I’m not really offended, and I’m sure that these kids listen to that music anyway, I’m just surprised that the skate center would risk angering parents with uncensored versions of those songs.

Another surprise was that I am not sore after a night of skating. I guess I’m not as old as I thought I was!

All in all, we had a lot of fun, and just as we do karaoke every other Friday, I wouldn’t mind skating on the opposite Fridays!

  1. I’m glad you liked it so much because we’re definitely going back. It brought back nice memories for me. I was at that rink quite a bit in elementary school, and it really hasn’t changed much (except for the music…)
Of course, I have to point out that you did take a spill in your skates..not on the actual rink, but on the carpet, of all places. You recovered nicely though. 🙂

  2. Rollerskating, wow.

This post makes me think of three things.

The Diet Pepsi commercial with the skaters. Because I have crush on the blonde girl for the duration of the commercial.

Any music is ok as long as it’s popular.

Which was proven when my friend Anders tried to get the DJ at a rock-n-bowl to play some Panacea.

  3. Kelly-Yeah, a fall on the carpet does not count!

    Jayson, which commercial is that?

  4. Jason must get his abilities from me, I used to go to Cholley’s skate rink in Louisville every Saturday night and Sunday afternoon! Keep going, it will keep you young.

  5. Interesting! Slightly misleading title (thought it was gonna be the NES game, hehehe), but I loved this post.

Maybe we’ll try roller skating sometime. I tried to get Ryan to go ice skating with me at Lock 3 in downtown Akron, back when we worked across the street from it. He chickened out and ended up just watching me go around a few times.

I wanna try horseback riding, too!

  6. We did ice skating last winter…it was painful. I didn’t fall, but the skates HURT.

I went horseback riding once, too. Meh.

  7. Wow. I haven’t skated in (ahem) two decades. There are several roller rinks in China, the outdoor variety. We have often talked of going, and skating to syrupy Canto-pop. The fact they probably don’t have skates in large sizes has kept us at home.
