Learning to habla spanish

Posted in and other fun, Education, Language on 29 September 2008 by jason

I’ve decided, quite at random, to learn spanish. Or is it Spanish? I can never remember if languages get capitalized. Anyway, I’ve just started, so the only thing’s I’ve learned are:

* That upside-down punctuation can go in the middle of a sentence
* That “v” is pronounced as a “b.” I’m having trouble wrapping my tongue around that.
* That I can not roll my “r”s. At all. Does anyone know if that cripples me?

I’m learning from a book that comes with cassette tapes, which I think will be better than a class because I can go at my own pace. Wish me luck!

Cedar Point!

Posted in and other fun, Memories, otter on 8 September 2008 by jason

Yesterday, the otter and I went to Cedar point for the second time this Summer! I won’t go into all the detail that I went into last time we went, but there were some highlights:

1)The Weather. It rained on the way up, but by the time we got there, the sun was out. It stayed around 75 degrees with a slight breeze, and the sun stayed out all day. We couldn’t have asked for better weather.

2)The Lines. There were none. We went on a sunday when they were only open for 8 hours. This means that there weren’t many people in the park. The only lines we stood in all day were a 10 minute line for Dragster and a 45 minute line for Maverick. Other than that, we got right on to all the rides. (in fact, we rode the Raptor twice in 10 minutes, and six of those minutes were actually spent on the ride.)

3) Top Thrill Dragster. OK. This ride is on a hydraulic system that sends the cars from a standstill to 120 MPH on the straightaway, they sends you straight up for a while, then straight down. When it was built 5 years ago, it was the tallest, fastest coaster in the world. Let me tell you that I’m deathly afraid of heights, and I hate going fast when I’m not in control. This ride, therefore, is all my greatest fears combined. I had a panic attack before it took off, and I hyperventilated at the end. I don’t think I’ve ever been that scared in my whole life. In retrospect, the ride doesn’t feel as fast as it is, so I’d probably do it again.

I’m sure there are other high points too, but these are the ones that stand out. I’m sure the otter will chime in later with her own high points!

Opening Day

I had intended on following up my post about my birthday with a long post about Cedar point, but I think I’ve waited too long for that. So, here are the highlights, with links to the Cedar Point website (where you can watch video* of each ride from a “rider’s eye view”)

Wicked Twister– The 1st ride we rode. I’m always terrified on the first ride of the summer for me, so I was pretty messed up by this one.

Magnum– When this was built in 1989, it was the fastest, tallest coaster in the world, I think. Now…it’s really not that scary. We rode it twice, the second time being a front-car night time ride. It was awesome. the ride swings you out over Lake Erie, and you can see the whole park, lit up.

Iron Dragon-We rode in the front on this one, too. This is actually a fairly peaceful ride…the only scary thing is that it always looks like you’re going to crash into a pole. One of my favorite rides, though.

Gemini-This is a “racing coaster.” Two cars run side by side, and depending on how physics happens to be working, the red car or the blue car will finish first. This goes much, much faster than I remembered it going, and the otter got tricked me on this one: at one point, she said, “put your arms up”, so I did, only to see a low beam coming for my fingers! It looked like I almost lost a hand. She got me with that one lst year, too!

Mavrick-This may have been the coolest experience this year! This ride doesn’t go to high, though it does have one 95 dergree drop. The big deal with this one is that it is pushed by hydraulics, meaning you are standing still, then you are suddenly rocketed through the track. There’s a tunnel half way through with more hydraulics, and this is why this was a cool experience. The hydraulics didn’t catch, as these ones push the cars as they are already moving. The failure of the hydraulic mechanism meant that we only made it half-way up the next hill, then rolled back through the tunnel, backwards. After a few minutes, the hydraulics were started back up, and we shot back up the hill! Fun, though a little unsettling. (A sign at the entrance of the ride warns that this may happen, so that took some of the edge off.)

Mean Streak-This is probably my favorite ride in the park. It’s a fast, wooden roller coaster that is monsterous in size. My favorite part near the end, is when the cars go into the framework of the 1st hill.

The Raptor-This one’s pretty awesome. It’s a suspended coaster, meaning that the track is above you. This thing whips you around, upside down and in loops. The only problem I have with this was that in the past, I have almost lost conciousness due to the looping (what jet pilots call “G-LOC”). The Fun-to-length-of-line ratio was awesome on this, as opposed to the 2 hour line on the Mavrick.

Power Tower-OK, it was the otter’s idea to ride this one. I hate being dropped, and that’s all this does if you ride the green tower. Hydraulics puch you down, so you fall faster than gravity’s pull. The red tower, which I rode last year, shoots you up into the air, then lets gravity bring you back down. Not my favorite ride, but the otter loves it.

There you have it! The weather was nice, the lines were mostly not-to-long, and we rode lots of rides! I hope to go back one more time this summer to hiy a few rides that I didn’t get to ride!

*Click on the videos (I watch the low-quality ones), then payuse them and let them load. I reccoment watching AT LEAST the Magnum, the Mavrick, The Mean Streak, and the Raptor).

Yesterday was the first day here in Canton, Ohio that it actually felt like spring. After work, I ran around and did all my errands (with the car windows rolled down!), then went home, opened all my windows, and slept for an hour as the breeze came in the bedroom.

After that, I threw some birdseed onto my balcony and read while watching my cats stare at all the birds.

Around 7 o’clock, to prevent myself from falling asleep again, I went out to the park to play some Disc Golf.

I forgot how much I love spring.

First Impressions…

On Friday night, I went to my brother and his girlfriend’s house to record some voices for that cartoon I wrote. We didn’t get anything recorded fot the cartoon, (I just wasn’t right for the part), but we did get me, drunk, talking into the mic. This is the product of that night:

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Emo Philips, here he is:

and here:

(My imitation is usually better, but i was seated when I recorded it, and I was tipsy. 🙂 )

Happy (almost) Halloween!

Last night, the otter and I had a fun night of costumed parading and drinking! (No, I’m not referring to any bedroom-related activities; get your mind out of the gutter! I’m looking at YOU, David B!)

Our night started with a trip to Akron, Ohio’s Highland Square. This was one the first places the otter and I went together, back before we were even dating (we were in Akron for a job fair). This time, we went to shop at Square Records, a music store that has stuff I can’t find anywhere else. I bought The Boy Least Likely To’s The Best Party Ever and The Mountain Goats’ Protein Source of the Future…Now!, while the otter got a Steely Dan LP and a used copy of The Flaming Lips’ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Good stuff.

From there, it was on to Two Amigos Mexican Grill. The food there is a bit pricey (though not too bad), but they have the best nachos I’ve ever had. (I think they put sugar on them!)

Next, we were off to Kent for the Halloween festivities. I wore my Green Lantern Costume (I’ll have pics later), and the otter wore a black halo. The two of us met up with my brother and his girlfriend (dressed as a samurai and an obscure anime character, respectively.) We bar-hopped, watching the drunken partygoers make asses of themselves.

What madness ensued? Well, I was molested by a native american warrior brave. I watched Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart almost fight said native american for grabbing Marie Antionette’s ass. I told the Flash that Batman wasn’t around because he was a punk. I saw 300 (well, more like 30) spartans marching to victory or death. The cast of Super Mario Cart raced down the street. The otter gave my phone number to some guy who was flirting with her while I was getting drinks. I recited the Green Lantern Oath to curious onlookers. I told Shaun that he had red on him, and he slurred back “‘ows that fur a slice of fried gold!?!” Batman threatened me and cussed me out. I tried to stop a crime in progress (an indoor smoker). Several Justin Timberlakes had their dicks in boxes.

All in all, a good time was had by all, and some of us even remembered it this morning!
