An Open Letter to Marcia Fudge

Posted in inturwebs, Politics on 16 December 2011 by jason

I just wrote to my Congresswoman, Rep. Marcia Fudge, regarding the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA, H.R. 3261):

Rep. Fudge,

Hello. I recently moved to Shaker Heights and was pleased to see that we have a representative who is as dedicated to Civil Rights and issues of Social Justice as you are. I know you are busy, so I will make this short.

I am writing to plead that you vote against the Stop Online Piracy Act.

Online Piracy is a big deal, and I understand the desire to put new tools in the hands of the legal system to deal with it, but the collateral damage the act will cause would hurt many websites and internet-based businesses.

The Internet has changed the way the world operates. While the freedom of the Internet has made the piracy of intellectual property easier then before its inception, this same freedom has opened new doors for Democracy, both in and outside of the United States. Social media sites like Twitter and YouTube have been used to make the world more aware of the plight of the inner cities of the United States, and they were instrumental in the revolutions in Libya and Egypt. Putting the keys to this powerful medium solely in the hands of the entertainment industry lawyers is counter to everything the United States is supposed to stand for.

I won’t take any more of your time, though I will provide a link to a video (about PROTECT-IP, the Senate version of the bill). Thanks you for your time, and I hope you will oppose this misguided bill.

Thank you for your time,

Jason Novak

OK, here’s the thing: SOPA almost passed today. I urge all of you to write similar letters to your congresspeople and tell them to say no to SOPA.

I’m FAMOUS!!! (Kind of)

A friend sent me a link of io9’s “Coolest Doctor Who T-Shirts,” and the one I helped design made this list! The artist, Kari Fry, got credit for that one on the site, but as she did 99% or the work, that’s cool.

Here’s the design!

The internets have taken my productivity!!!

Yeah. So, I’ve gotten, like, zero creative writing done between playing video games, talking on Facebook, and watching ukulele cover songs on YouTube. I’ve done quite a bit of writing, however, on ToEleven.

Here are two posts in the last couple of weeks that I’m proud of:
An Open Letter to the Girl at the Music Store
My interview with Keith Freund of Trouble Books

Besides that, I finished up a story I was working on and sent it to a contest. Still waiting to hear back about that, fingers crossed and whatnot. But yeah…a pretty unproductive couple of weeks.

Maybe next week, I’ll actually do something…

And I’m back

Ok…I FINALLY have the internet at home, so this blog should be active again.

In the last week, my neighbor situation kind of corrected itself in that the abusive guy and his abused girlfriend left under cover of night. Of course, their banging things around as they carried them down the stairs and out the door kept me up all night, but they won’t be bothering me again. Not the solution I had hoped for, but hey, at least the neighborhood has improved.

Also, the new landlord took over, so I actually have a landlord. So far she’s already had the parking lot plowed a few times, though, ironically, the plow company she is using is owned by the old landlord.

Other than that, the snowpocalypse has been pretty boring. I’ve read some stuff (I just started on William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition, and I’m getting ready to start on David Wong’s John Dies at the End, I’ve watched some stuff (I just finished Extras with Ricky Gervais), and I’ve played some stuff (I’m almost through with Neverwinter Nights, and Fallout 3 is the bomb.)

So there you go. I should be on more often now. I know you are all thrilled. 😛

What’s going on with me?

Well, I have been away from the blog again, due of lack of interwebs, amongst other things. It’s been a fairly eventful couple of weeks, though.

First of all, I introduced you all to my girlfriend, Yvonne? Well, she’s not my girlfriend anymore. We’re still dating, but we’ve decided to take a couple of steps back. I think it’s because I was too much of a good thing. 😉

Secondly, there was some sort of holiday? I think? Anyway, I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. I did. I Saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox with Yvonne and her kids, I had them over over for a gift exchange/supper, I visited my grandparents and parents, and I had Asian food with my brother and his lady-friend, neither of whom are Asian!

Third, I did some writing for My Very Own Adventure. Be on the lookout for more products from them, including their “Unrated” line of MVOAs for grown-ups!

Other than that, I’ve been writing for my other blog, …to Eleven, with my friend Jayson. If you don’t read that blog yet, bookmark it!

So, that is my Winter break so far. Hope everyone is staying warm!

Things to do the day after breaking up with your girlfriend.

Decide not to do any of these things.

Forget to eat.

New Blog!

Posted in inturwebs, Music on 2 September 2009 by jason

Hey all,

I know I haven’t been on here lately, but I just wanted to lat you all know that I am working on another blog with my friend Jayson. It’s called “…to eleven,” and it’s a music blog. Right now, Jayson’s the only one who’s written for it…I need more sleep before i’m prepared to drop some wisdom. Anyway, go check it out, link to it, worship it.

Well…(Week wrap-up)

…I got my laptop fixed, but I lost access to the internet at the same time (no comments from the peanut gallery), so I haven’t been on like I wanted to be. Also, my phone’s been having problems, so I’m basically cut off from the outside world when I’m at home. It’s kind of weird, actually. So right now, the only way to get a hold of me is to come to my place and knock on my window.

Besides that, though, this week has been OK. I’ve been getting to work early to go to so I can watch old episodes of The Prisoner. I never got around to seeing that show, so I’m happy to get the chance. Good stuff, that. The first week at work has been relatively slow, bit I know it’s about to get extremely busy.

I’ve also decided that if I ever find the Weezer song “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn),” I am singing it, no matter how poorly I actually know the song. Here’s the video:

Oh, yeah…that’s happening.

Listen to this!

On the Youtubes, I found this cover version of The Mountain Goats’ “Palmcorder Yajna” It pretty much rocks my face off.

And here are the Mountain Goats doing it live, for comparison. I mean that I’m linking it for comparison. The Mountain Goats performed it live because, hey, that’s what they do.

This Week…

Ah…the hardest part of the semester for me is done, and finals week is here. As you may know, I’m a writing tutor, so the week before finals is the last week students have to bring papers to me. That means that last week was the busiest week of the semester for me, hence the lack of blog activity.

Don’t think that that means I’m just working and sleeping, though. I’ve also been writing and workshopping a couple of short stories that are just about ready to be sent out for possible publication. I’ll keep you posted!

Also, I’ve recently discovered Twitter, or as I call it, “my micro-music blog.” Sign up, look for “jrobertnovak”, and be kept informed of all the music I listen to in a given day. I know, I know, you can hardly wait!

I’m also reading a lot, and I’m preparing for my Birthday celebration next week, so I’m a busy guy. However, this week, you should see more of me here.
