What I’m working on…

Posted in Writing with tags , , on 12 January 2011 by jason

I’ve got nothing I’m professionally working on in the moment, but in my spare time, I’ve started to write a sword and sorcery story. This is the rough-rough draft of what I wrote last night, though I’ve already changed a lot of stuff so that we don’t get to the action so fast, and I’ve changed the motivation of the character.

The concept of this is “Conan the Barbarian with Dinosaurs.”

The first sun, Rasia as the people of the North call it, the morning star, was lying low on the horizon, far across the vast, shapeless desert. The evening sun, Marta, hung high, beating down on the cracked, desiccated earth. Here and there, large rocks, the size of houses, dotted the landscape but promised no shade, no escape from the evening sun’s cruelty. All seemed lifeless, for what life could possibly survive under the scrutiny of the twin suns, godlike in their presence, demonic in their power? Continue reading

What I’ve been up to…

Posted in Writing with tags on 11 January 2011 by jason

This is old news, though I never mentioned it on this blog, but I helped write The Silvervine Core Rulebook and Cyrus Worldbook. It’s a fantasy/steampunk-themed role-playing game, and I worked on the Worldbook section. So far, it’s been a pretty successful thing, selling out of all the physical copies and doing quite well as a PDF. It’s a good game, too. I had nothing to do with any of the game-mechanic stuff, but I am currently GMing it with a group, and we all seem to be having fun. So if you like Role-playing games, or if you just collect the work of J. Robert Novak, make sure you get this!

Again with the not posting!

Heh. I keep saying I’m returning to this blog, but it doesn’t seem to happen. I have been busy, though. I’ve been writing a ton (literally…I weighed it) of content for To Eleven, and it seems I got a freelance gig! I won’t go into the details, but a company is redesigning their website, and I’m writing the content for it! So I’m back to being a working writing, as well as a writing tutor.

Besides that? Well, last weekend, I drove to Pittsburgh by myself (which, if you know how easily I get lost, you know what a feat that was!) to see one of my favorite bands, Balthrop, Alabama play. It was a great show, and I got to see my old high school friend Chris, who’s in the band. After the show, so that I wouldn’t have to make the 2 1/2 hour drive so late, the band let me crash with them.

That’s about it, really. Well, that and lots of karaoke! In fact, this weekend, my friend James came out to do some karaoke, as well as another high school friend, Marjorie, and her husband, Jason. It was a great time…if anyone ever wants to come out and try it, let me know. I’ll tell you when we’re doing it again!

Well, I’m off to write for this project. I’ll be on here more often, I SWEAR! (Yeah, right.)

The internets have taken my productivity!!!

Posted in inturwebs, Writing on 5 March 2010 by jason

Yeah. So, I’ve gotten, like, zero creative writing done between playing video games, talking on Facebook, and watching ukulele cover songs on YouTube. I’ve done quite a bit of writing, however, on ToEleven.

Here are two posts in the last couple of weeks that I’m proud of:
An Open Letter to the Girl at the Music Store
My interview with Keith Freund of Trouble Books

Besides that, I finished up a story I was working on and sent it to a contest. Still waiting to hear back about that, fingers crossed and whatnot. But yeah…a pretty unproductive couple of weeks.

Maybe next week, I’ll actually do something…

Back to work!

Well, a new semester begins. I’m back at work (and with an internet connection!) so I hope to be here more often than I have been last month. However, just because I’ve been away from the blog doesn’t mean that I haven’t been blogging.

My friend Jayson completely redesigned To Eleven, and we’ve been posting stuff once a day or more there. If you’re not reading that blog, why don’t you go ahead and take a look at it. I’ll wait.

No, seriously…take a look at it.

It’s kind of a weird thing…Jayson and I started the blog just to talk about music, but we’ve found links to our blog on various other web sites, and Jayson found someone who cited our blog in their post, which is hella weird.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. besides that, though, I’ve been finishing up some short stories (“Things I Learned from my Father,” “Rich Girl,”), and I’ve been taking mental notes for two other stories I plan to write (which may end up being novel-length projects. GASP!).

I’ve also been working out more often. Did you get your tickets? Because these pythons are SICK! I think that’s how that saying goes.

NaNoWriMo day 30, Movember day 30.

Posted in Movember, NaNoWriMo, Writing on 30 November 2009 by jason

Well, today is the last day for a couple things here.

First of all, today is the final day for NoNoWriMo. I actually finished on Friday, so today is just a relaxing day watching other people cross the finish line. I had a lot of fun with it this year, and I enjoyed my story more than I did last year’s NaNo. I’d like to thank Yvonne for helping me stay motivated!

Also, today is THE LAST DAY TO DONATE TO MOVEMBER. The money goes to fight prostate and testicular cancer. That means that tomorrow, I shave this stupid moustache off.

The stupid moustache.

Here’s a random NaNoWriMo excerpt for you! Continue reading
